SRC-Accredited Master Surgeon in Robotic Joint Replacement
Adjunct Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
Indiana University School of Medicine
Dr. Adam Cien is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. He is an SRC-accredited Master Surgeon in Robotic Joint Replacement, an accreditation he achieved from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) in 2026 based on rigorous standards covering surgical expertise and volume, clinical pathways, equipment, and patient education.
Dr. Cien performs 600 to 700 primary and revision hip and knee replacements each year. He has specific expertise in the direct superior approach to total hip replacement, which spares the posterior soft tissues and allows most patients to recover without hip precautions, and in Mako robotic-arm-assisted total knee replacement using a subvastus, quadriceps-sparing technique. His experience ranges from minimally invasive joint replacement to fracture care to complex revision surgery of the hip and knee.
Dr. Cien earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Science degree from Rush University in Chicago, IL. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Michigan State University. He further honed his skills through fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction at the world-renowned Hedley Orthopaedic Institute in Phoenix, AZ.
Since 2019, Dr. Cien has served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery and serves as a Junior Board Examiner, helping evaluate the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons seeking certification. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS), a designation recognizing his extensive experience, commitment to patient care, and dedication to professional development.
Dr. Cien finds great satisfaction in the hands-on nature of orthopedic surgery and the tangible improvements he witnesses in his patients’ lives. He values forming personal relationships with his patients, understanding their unique stories, and guiding them toward recovery. His mission is to restore function and improve quality of life through pain-free movement.
Outside of work, Dr. Cien enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his wife, Rachel, and their three children, Lincoln, Piper, and Eddie. Whether it’s exploring new destinations or sharing everyday moments, he cherishes family time as an essential part of his life.
